James congratulated our Club on the work towards the Fun Run this year on 1 September - James first Father’s Day.  James then gave an overview of what has been/is happening State-wide and in our local Community:
State projects include:
  • The metro northwest driver-less train that will accommodate 100,000 passengers a day.
  • Boring machines now working under the Harbour for the Sydney metro to the new station at North Sydney.
  • The Bank West Stadium has opened (James recommended we take a tour of this brilliant first-class stadium.)
  • There will be construction of schools and hospitals throughout State in the next four years.
Manly projects include:
  • The tunnel project – final design will be completed by the end of the year. The tunnel is in two parts and by-passes 14 sets of traffic lights through Mosman, Cremorne and Neutral Bay. Balgowlah Golf Club will be disrupted with construction of the tunnel however members will be offered membership fees for another club for the duration. Nothing will happen before mid 2020. James apologized for the disruption.
  • Planning is underway for another tunnel to relieve traffic on the Harbour Bridge.
  • The Clubhouse at Curl Curl that was deliberately burnt down by vandals will be re-built.
  • There is a beaches link project that will improve express bus services and connect to the metro station in North Sydney. This should mean a 20 minute travel time from Manly to the city.
  • In all there are 32 projects on the go across electorate.Transport planners are working on ways to make the best they can of Military Road – public transport is central to the project.
There was discussion about water supply to Sydney and what will be done to serve the increasing demand for water as the population grows. Raising the wall of Warragamba Dam was discussed (98% of the State is still in drought.) There has been plenty of rain in Sydney recently but it hasn’t been collected effectively. The major thing to tackle is rainwater runoff that currently goes into the rivers and ultimately the ocean. Different concepts are being discussed. Council approvals for domestic water tanks are as simple as possible. James explained that the new housing developments have better opportunities to save water than the re-wiring of the centuries old plumbing in Sydney CBD. The Water Minister has asked if metropolitan communities would accept recycled water? It may be acceptable for all aspects of farming or public gardens etc., but possibly not for human consumption. Several club members cited examples of how to save water including use of the fresh water stream at North Head and turning off sprinklers in parks and gardens when there has been sufficient recent rain. The Urban canopy has been increased by 40% with beautiful trees and the shade is cooling however the plants need to be watered.Interest free loans from State government are available to purchase solar panels and battery installations for private homes.
James answered questions about the new Frenchs Forest hospital, stating that though Mr Hazzard has been disappointed with what has been happening recently, lots of good things are going on including surgical operations, use of equipment etc. that could not have been done at Manly or Mona Vale. As a piece of infrastructure it is a brilliant building but there have been many challenges in the initial stages.
With regard to the old Manly hospital – one section will be developed for a hospice (similar to Bear Cottage). Money has already been raised for the project and reference groups have been asked what is needed for the hospice. The project will start in the first half on next year. The other section of the area may be used for health and wellness services. Some sections of community want to see affordable housing however this may prove complicated in that - what is meant by “affordable housing” and would need to be clearly defined. James believes that health and wellness would work well in conjunction with the hospice. He said that all Heritage areas will be retained on the site.
The current Community Centre is going to be given back to Manly Public School to extend their classroom facilities. A new Community Centre will be housed at the old Manly Rugby Club site.
There was discussion about mental illness and homelessness in the Manly area. James said this is a problem exacerbated by the fact that it is a beachside town and popular with homeless people because of the facilities available (for showering, etc.) The new Community Centre will enhance facilities for people with mental health issues and those who are homeless. The Premier has announced her priorities in her new term including moving away from infrastructure into tackling social issues – homelessness, suicide, domestic violence etc. With regard to mental health – a mental health summit is being hosted on 27 August. Service providers will be invited so that they can connect with each other to try and find solutions to these complex issues.
Ken thanked James for coming along and giving us an insight into what is happening both State wide and in the Manly area. James said that is was a privilege and honour to do his job.
Mosman Public School stall 20 July next
  • Susie asked for volunteers to help on the day especially for the setting up and dismantling at the end of the day. Arrival time 7.00am and start packing up at 4.00pm. Doug has offered the use of his gazebo and a table for the event. Robert will follow up with John for the teardrop banners. Susie will contact volunteers with suggestions of a roster for the day.
Fun Run update
  • Doug said that we have 260 registrants so far that is more than at the same period last year. There is a “spike” each time something comes out on social media.
  • The early bird discount has been extended to 1 August so that schools currently on holiday have the opportunity of taking up the discount when they return the last week in July.
  • Section heads are asked to get back to Doug via email with an assessment of what they need on the day, so that if necessary additional equipment can be obtained. This is urgently required by the end of this week.
  • Flyers are now available including A5 leaflets and A4 posters. Club members are asked to take however many they need for distribution. More supplies will be available when required.
  • A designated charities meeting will be held at Lifeline Balgowlah on first week after school holidays.
  • Jay has asked that Club members focus on more volunteers as we are still short though we have had promises of good numbers from schools and Clontarf. Jay said that if every Club member brought in two more volunteers that would ease the problem.
  • Equipment is being organized so that there is not so much work on the night before the event. (For example signs advertising the run, and equipment will be dropped off during the night before so that it is all ready for the section heads to put properly in place when they arrive in the morning). Each section head needs to take responsibility for their own area.
  • Resident information letters are currently being printed for distribution in two drops – a fortnight before and week before the event. Club member volunteers will be needed for the drop off of the letters.
  • Ginny asked that Club members go onto the Manly facebook page and “like” the comments. The social media team is doing ongoing work on the facebook page to attract attention and we need the “likes” to make sure as many people as possible see what is happening with the fun run.
  • Next fun run committee meeting is 16 July at Doug’s place 2.00pm.
Pioneer Clubhouse
  • The Clubhouse has extended the kitchen facilities to include a café. The official opening is this Thursday at Pioneer Clubhouse between 5.00pm and 7.00pm All Club members invited. James Griffin will be preset as well as other dignitaries from our community. Doug will be advertising the fun run at some stage during the event.
