PRESIDENT DOUG'S WEEKLY REPORT

Hi everyone

A busy week this week! We were consolidating & understanding where we are at with our various Committees’ action plans, looking at our financial position, and making some key decisions about the funding support we can offer to a number of local charities, our youth support programs, our work in PNG, and our Rotary Foundation. The good thing is that despite some additional costs associated with organising this year’s Fun Run including the terrible weather in the week leading up to the event – we have still found ourselves in a position where we can do a good deal. Some of our Committees’ contributions have been outstanding – and we’ve got every confidence that all are committed to delivering their goods: so a huge thank you to all concerned. It’s not necessarily easy, but it’s always worthwhile.

More on the outcome from our Board Meeting, next week.  I am very excited in next Tuesday's meeting Lynne and her team will be highlighting the progress they’re making with their sanitation project in PNG (including showing their new video); and it’s likely we’ll be having some really interesting guests. Please make every effort to attend.

I hope everyone has a great week.  Doug

MEETING NOTES

Tuesday 30th October 2018

Affirmation And Toast

We give thanks for food, friends, fellowship and the opportunity to serve through Rotary. Toast to Australia

Apologies:   Beverley Leahy, Barbara Gardiner, David Park, Tracey Rushmer, Ty Stokoe, Robyn & Ted Waters

Duties:   Desk – George McLelland; Notes - Sherry Midgley; Sergeant-at-Arms – Vivien Coulson

Welcome:   Lisa Gallate - Guest Speaker, Virgina - Prospective member

KEY ACTIVITY: GUEST SPEAKER – Lisa Gallate, Author of Hitting my Reset.

Lisa gave a very moving talk. She is a Commercial litigator for a law firm in the city and wrote the book Hitting my Reset. The book is about the topic of grief and it was written after Lisa experienced a number of deaths in her own family including her sister and husband who died in a car accident, her brother and her first husband.   She wrote the book for a number of reasons but mainly to honour the people that had died in her life and to support others going through similar experiences and pain. An interesting read for all on a painful topic.

GENERAL BUSINESS
Disappointing news: our applications for grants from Northern Beaches Council for the Manly Fun Run and the bus for the PCYC were not successful. Council will nevertheless waive all event application fees (and has asked us to put our Fun Run forward for an Australia Day Award)

A big thank you to the International Committee that came up with the idea of touring the North Head Tunnels and having a picnic. A big thank you to David Park for organising, it was a great day and we made over $500. Maybe we could take the Ghost tour next time as a group event :-)

Spam Communications

Dear Rotarian,
Rotary recently learned that scammers have created multiple communication and social media accounts that impersonate RI President Barry Rassin, RI President-elect Mark Maloney, General Secretary John Hewko and perhaps other Rotary leaders. The communication accounts include or involve email, WhatsApp and Viber.  The social media accounts have been on LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook.

These are not authentic Rotary communications. They are phishing and spoofing attempts to obtain money and personal information.  The perpetrators may attempt to convince Rotary members to send funds to support alleged Rotary causes.

Rotary monitors for and responds to these attempts as part of an ongoing effort to keep member, program participant, and staff data safe. We also work with LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, and WhatsApp to remove imposter accounts.

Neither President Rassin’s, President-elect Maloney’s, nor General Secretary Hewko’s authentic accounts have been compromised.

Rotary members should continue to exercise caution:

  • Disregard any suspicious message that offers money, requests money, or asks for your personal information.
  • Avoid opening attachments or following links in suspicious messages.
  • Pay close attention to the details of the email address and signature block to verify the sender.

If you receive what you believe to be a suspicious message from the president, general secretary, or another Rotary leader, please forward it to fraudreport@rotary.org and then delete it immediately.

Regards,
Rick Kick
Chief Information Officer, RI
