PRESIDENT DOUG'S WEEKLY REPORT

Does anyone NOT realise how close it is to Christmas? SO many functions being held to wrap up the year, celebrating in many cases amazing and often heart-warming stories about acts of generosity, courage and what we as Rotarians stand for: service above self. Good news DOES count!

And we’ve got our own good news, closer to home. On the people side, first.  A very warm first welcome to Virginia Parker: our latest ‘all fired up’ new member: and to Adam Achterstrat whom we hope will be joining us shortly too.  Rhiannon Bunting will be away for a while but it’s for the best of all reasons: the impending birth of her first child. Our heartiest congratulations and best wishes! And so too do our best wishes go to one of our longest serving and most dedicated members, Vivien Coulson, whom we’ve also (hopefully only temporarily) lost not to child raising but to grand-parenting duties, further north.

We should also congratulate and thank Ted and Robyn Waters for their incredible generosity in supporting our Rotary Foundation so magnificently – aptly recognised in a well-attended Rotary Foundation dinner this week by awards received from Immediate Past Rotary International President Ian Risely.  Offsetting this, though, we send our warmest get-well-soon greetings to Past President Ken Hopley following the news of his illness. With best wishes for a speedy recovery, from us all.

Second, regarding our finances.

Thus far this (financial) year we’ve been able to commit around $25,000 to various local charities and for youth development purposes, having raised also around $5,000 for both drought relief and Rotary’s End Polio Now campaign – not forgetting the generous grant we’ve received (and topped up further) for our sanitation project in PNG. Without our Fun Run (and the year-on-year provisioning we need to set aside to make it a success) such actions wouldn’t be possible.  The good news is that we’ve already received significant offers of support from both Northern Beaches Council and Northern Beaches Area Police Command that will go a long way towards making next year’s event – our tenth! - even better. Take a deep breath, everyone, and enjoy the upcoming break – while we’ve got many background approvals and so on already in place, there will be whole of club actions the moment we return from holidays in the new year!

With so much to look forward to, wouldn’t it be great if we shared the news more widely – and encouraged even more community members to join with us, sharing the feeling that ‘doing good’ brings?

Cheers, all, Doug

KEY ACTIVITY 2 – GUEST SPEAKER CATHY HOCKEY – Bushlink (update on project)

Bushlink is an organisation that employs people with intellectual disabilities to work on Bush regeneration projects. A lot of the projects are through schools or councils.
They ran a project to build specially designed and self-irrigating veggie beds this year with the help of Manly Rotary Club. They trained the team up to build the veggie beds and put them in a number of local schools. It was a successful project and they had a lot of learnings. They will look to see how the model can be made viable moving forward.
Pathways into Bushlink - they are looking at recruitment strategies for employing new people as well as building training programs for the employees that have been with Bushlink for a long time.
