KEY ACTIVITY -

EVELYN CIOCCO GAVE A REVIEW OF REBECCA FRY'S PRESENTATION AT A RECENT ROTARY CONFERENCE TITLED NEW MODELS OF ROTARY

Rotary Clubs are encouraged to think about different models of membership, particularly because of the overall decline in membership.

TRADITIONAL CLUBS
Weekly face-to-face meetings that meet at same time and place, includes a meal, a speaker and may or may not include traditions and Sergeant session.

E-CLUBS
Using technology to connect
Meetings on line
Members are likely to catch up in person
May do happy coins (donation)
Not just same place same time
Different times
Real friendships across the world
Lots of nomads have E-clubs

ROTARY PASSPORT CLUBS
Focus on service rather than meetings
Often have to complete a certain number of hours of service
Once hours completed their Rotary Passport is stamped
Weekly face-to-face meetings are optional
Full membership $23 Corporate $42 and Associate $5 a month
Potential members have a trial period of four months to make up their mind

PERSONALISED MEMBERSHIPS
Focus on engagement and impact – similar to a project based membership

TRADITIONAL CLUBS WITH A TWIST
Change time and place of meetings
Meal  - maybe
Weekly meetings – or fortnightly
No Grace or Toast
Sergeant session – usually not

GREATER FLEXIBILITY MODELS CAN STILL PROVIDE THE SAME IMPACT TO THE COMMUNITY.

Club members contributed their thoughts on the presentation including –

  • Could Rotary link between Clubs (around the world) electronically thereby creating a much larger market and broadening exposure.  This would need agreement from other Clubs. It broadens the exposure and could happen at District Conferences, etc.
  • The concept of vocational clubs has now changed. People who join want to see value in other business people coming along.
  • Do clubs need all the formalities that Rotary insists upon? The Chamber of Commerce is business focused and we are retiree focused. Rotary needs to focus on projects rather than formality.
  • People want business exposure. “How will it benefit my business?”
  • People are interested in fun and want to make a difference.
  • There are instances where groups of people need to have meetings (for example organization of the fun run.) Small sub-group meetings are happening now within the Manly Rotary Club committees.
  • Rotary International is attempting to address the matter of membership that is a positive sign. There is no limit to what we can try to do.
  • The market stall will enable our Club to get into and network with the Community. This is being backed up with the revised website. There is already a plan in place for membership recruitment of the Club that needs to be initiated with new full members, corporate and “friends” of Manly Rotary.
GENERAL MATTERS

NORTHERN BEACHES CLUSTER
Yuletide event 17 August. This will be a fun evening for people to network and get to know each other. You need to wear a funny hat. The fund-raiser was originally to raise funds for the PCYC bus but another worthy cause will be found for funds raised. Cost $30/$35? per person (finger food) and venue is PCYC at Dee Why.

WEBSITE UPDATE:
  • Sign up form will be on the site and will explain membership types
  • Previous projects will be displayed with a brief outline of what we achieved – a history of things we have achieved
  • Upcoming events and projects will have a stand-alone page with a brief outline of the projects and the types of volunteers that we need. (For example a photographer, journalist or copywriter.)
  •  “Our story” – what Rotary means to me. Interview with people we have helped in the past, or current and past members. May include a historical story of Manly Rotary Club. Evelyn will ask RYLA/RYPEN recipients to give us a story about how they enjoyed and what they got out of the experience
  • Photographs are needed – members will receive an email explaining how to get them to James and Virginia. Both Richard and Doug have files of photographs they will forward.
FUN RUN UPDATE
  • The Clontarf Foundation has promised ten volunteers and ten registrants and has asked if the registrants can be free of charge. Club members present agreed that the Club fund the ten boys in consideration of our past and present association with Clontarf.
  • Head Marshalls are asked to email Doug a list of their equipment requirements as soon as possible. This should include the quantity of equipment and volunteers required in their sector (banners, signs, bollards, witches hats, posters, etc.). Each Head Marshall has been emailed a diagram of their sector to assist with the list.
