What a great day last Saturday at the Blackmore’s annual Christmas hamper packing morning and a big thank you to all our volunteers from the Club. It was started 38 years ago by Marcus Blackmore and Aaron Oliver. After our packing of 400 hampers for various local charities, Blackmore’s CEO David Brown took our group on a tour of the “campus” that was so inspiring. The company has a total commitment to workplace safety and in encouraging the conservation of our environment. Blackmores generates the majority of its own power and wherever possible sources its ingredients locally. They are totally Australian owned and their employee retention rate is higher than most companies – why not with a pool, gym, restaurant, retail outlet and clinic all on the premises. After our tour we were treated to a delicious lunch attended by friendly Blackmores staff. A special thank you also to David Brown for his tireless efforts in organising the morning for Saturday and the past 15 years. Thanks also to Ted for bringing along our caps so that we were all in our uniform for the occasion.
Next week is going to be particularly busy (check dates below), with the Northern Beaches Clubs meeting at Balgowlah where we will discuss our proposal for a bus for PCYC, our Manly Rotary Club Board Meeting, Fun Run Meeting, Pioneer Club House Christmas party and our own Club Christmas Party on 14 December at 2 Ocean Road. We know it will be very difficult for you to attend all these events, however, we hope you can at least make it to the Christmas Party for our last social gathering of the year.
Look forward to seeing you next Tuesday for our final Club meeting in 2018 after which I hope you enjoy a truly wonderful Christmas break with heaps of fun, love and laughter, and every best wish for the New Year; may it bring you good health and happiness.
Cheers, Susie

Welcome: David Thomas - Lifeline, Donald Gibson - Northern Beaches Council, Linda Tylor - Texas
Donald Gibson - Northern Beaches Council
Donald talked about the proposal to build a new Lifesaving building as the current building is in a state of repair. The council are entering into a consultation phase. There is a page under the Northern Beaches council website (under Your Say) where people can look and have their say about the different options. There is also an invitation for people to become part of a working group that will meet over the next couple of months and they will build out the proposal of needs. Timescale is a couple of years before there will be any building work.
Key Activity - David Thomas - Lifeline
David talked about suicide and the fact that it's a big issue. 8 people die a day in Australia through suicide (1 every 3 hours). For people 15 - 44 it’s the leading cause of death but also in Pittwater we now have a higher number of younger people taking their lives. It is double the number of road tolls that gets far more attention in the press. It is hard to pin down the reasons why but for a lot of people they feel overwhelmed by daily pressure. 65,000 calls were taken last year at Balgowlah lifeline and the numbers are increasing. Suicide prevention group has been put together by Northern Beaches Council led by Dave Darcy. It connects the local community groups. It has fenced a Warriewood blowhole which has decreased the numbers and provided assist training for responders. It costs millions of dollars to run the organisation, grants and fundraisers only cover a short amount so please support the local book fairs and local lifeline shops.
Linda Tyler - Guest
Linda has travelled a lot this year to Mexico, Iceland and has ended up in Australia. She has been in 3 different Rotary clubs since 2007 - Mexico, Marble Falls, Burnett and is an eclub. Primary involved with youth activities.
