A big thank you to those who are volunteering for the northern beaches cluster Rotary Clubs community working bee now to be on one day only – Saturday 6 April. It’s at Aspect Vern Barnett School, (Autism Spectrum Austalia) 41 Cook Street, Forestville. Please could you let me know you are coming by next Thursday 28 February. Warren McGurgan who is organising it all (Belrose club) will then give us all the details of time etc. There is general maintenance (painting etc.), gardening and removal of fencing and metal poles in the playground needed – so some easy work and a little that may require a bit of “muscle”. The day will be followed by a social bbq. This will be a great opportunity for our Club to do some Community work that requires a commitment of time that we haven’t been involved with for a while.
Thank you also to Jay and Linton for joining our Fun Run Committee –  your expertise is most welcome. Though you are not members of our Club it is encouraging to receive assistance with a specific project like the fun run. This may be a way ahead for projects in the future when expert and hands-on back-up is needed.
Enjoy your week.

Susie Morgan reported on a meeting with the Northern Beaches cluster of Rotary Clubs (Belrose, Dee Why Warringah, Upper Northern Beaches, Balgowlah, Brookvale, Frenchs Forest). Matters that arose included:
  • Offer from David Stewart-Hunter from Balgowlah club to advertise – promote events on his radio station “hour” (Radio Northern Beaches – 88.7/90.3FM) on Thursdays and Sundays between 5pm and 6pm 0414967722  (it was suggested we ask him to talk about our Information Evening on 13 March next.)
  • The Brittle Bones Foundation Conference  3 – 4 October, where it was agreed clubs would support a fund-raiser dinner to provide assistance to the Foundation Conference. Details to be provided later by Belrose Club
  • Conduct a combined 2019 fund-raising dinner for the Northern Beaches cluster with a decision to be made about distribution of profits from the event. Each Club to offer a volunteer for the organising committee (thank you Beverley Leahy - with assistance from Susie Morgan).
  • A Northern Beaches cluster social gathering/working bee (see details above) for Aspect Vern Barnett School for children with Autism Spectrum.
  • The meeting supported the production of a joint calendar to promote upcoming events that the AG will email to all clubs on a regular basis and eventually on-line with the help of Simon from Rotaract. We need to email dates to Warren McGurgan.
  • There was a good response to our guest speaker Gemma Sisia at our Club on 12 March.
The Club received a request from organisers of the Bobbin Head Cycle Classic on Sunday 24 March. They need volunteers to help with the event for two hours as marshalls from 7.30am to 9.30am or 9.30am to 11.30am on the day. The event starts and finishes at Karuah Oval Turramurra. If you can help please check the website for full details of how you can volunteer.
Club members were asked to return their Foundation Towers to George McLelland by the end of March (hopefully full of $2 coins) so that he can send to Foundation before he leaves on his travels.
Tracy gave us a fascinating insight into her most exciting career. Tracy was born in Monterey and has travelled extensively through China, Iran, Europe and India to name a few of the countries where she has worked. Tracy has been involved with forensic study in the lab with “cook and look” experiments, built a laboratory at Macquarie University and is now involved with “cook and zap” experiments so that scientists can now watch what is happening.  As an Earth Scientist/ Geologist we are proud of what Tracy has achieved and Australia is lucky to have her in our midst. Tracy’s work has a commercial basis too, including super conductors, generating clean energy, imaging in 3D and stress strain analysis.
