With thanks to a number of Club members we’ve made strides this week with grant applications to assist with ongoing projects, and also with defraying the costs of next year’s fun run.  In this regard we owe a great deal to Northern Beaches Council for their innovative focus on awarding a number of community service grants. So for an update: As mentioned at our breakfast meeting we have put in an application to NBC for support for next year’s fun run, and have been encouraged by various Council representatives’ responses to the news. Next, regarding Northern Beaches PCYC. It appears likely Rotary will give us financial support to assist in purchasing a bus to ferry PCYC members to and from the Center. We are in the process of applying for an additional Community Service grant from NBC for the same purpose. and are hoping that with a modicum of support from other Rotary Clubs along the Northern beaches, we’ll reach our goal. Finally, Manly Women’s Shelter: Always sadly in need of further support to meet unabated demand, we have given them an undertaking to see what we can do to address a number of specific projects, again hopefully with success in our application for further Community Service grant assistance. Fingers crossed. We’ll keep you posted!

On a related note: how impressive was it this morning to hear Azita Abdollahan’s address? While we have been focusing on securing additional funds for the projects we have in mind, she gave us a template for doing great work with absolutely nothing at all – other than the power of social media to get her message (and her appeal for donations) across. Homelessness is rife, and without shelter, homeless people’s needs are acute. Is there any way in which we can find (within our Club?) someone to champion such a process here in Manly as well..

Finally: it’s July, the start of our new year (again!). Even with so many of our members away soaking up a warmer northern hemisphere’s sun, let’s see what a fun night we can make of it next Tuesday evening, thanking those office bearers who’ve been responsible for getting us through the last twelve months, and welcoming our new leaders for 2018-9. (Don't forget no meeting next Tuesday morning!)

Have a great week ahead.

Azita gave a great presentation on homelessness and how you can make a difference without a big budget. Originally a refugee, Azita has lived in Australia for 18 years. She has 2 children and left a violent marriage about 6 years ago. Azita has her own hairdressing salon and is a qualified psychologist. 2 years ago she had a bad car accident and was diagnosed with a tumour. She recovered however realised she wanted to do something meaningful and give back to the community. Over the last 2 years she goes down to Martin Place on a weekly basis and has developed a lot of relationships with the homeless residents. She uses the power of facebook to put out requests for donations and lots of people donate items, bringing them to her salon for her to distribute. She currently has a project on 500 rugs for 500 hugs, if anyone has any rugs they would like to donate, please give them to Sherry and she will organise for them to be taken over to Azita.
