PRESIDENT SUSIE'S WEEKLY REPORT

What a great day on Tuesday! Our usual club meeting and a social farewell to Vivien who is leaving us for Brisbane this week to spend time with her family – we wish you well, safe travelling and hope that you have some great adventures with the grand children. Bon voyage also for your holiday in Sri Lanka and we look forward to your return at some point down the track – in the meanwhile keep safe and enjoy. As well as much fun and laughter with Vivien the farewell also included a Melbourne Cup “pot luck” lunch (what a feast!) with sweeps for the punters and much excitement – we all watched the race with anticipation. John Warren won the trophy for best dressed with his flashing bow tie, hat and dapper outfit. Evelyn presented Vivien with a delightful necklace and earrings to go with her trendy outfits. It was my duty roster at the Salvation Army lunch for the homeless on the Wednesday so I was able to take the leftovers from the delicious lunch to the clients. They expressed much gratitude for the “goodies”.

Whilst at the Salvos, I came across a poster with details that may interest our club members. (see below) Jon Owen, CEO Wayside is giving a presentation “Stories from the Street – Wayside Chapel” on Saturday 10 November at 7.30pm. The venue is William Street Studios, 3 William Street, Fairlight – admission is free and includes drinks and canapés. Jon wants to dig behind the headlines and find out what is truly going on. “What’s the Story” engages in deeper conversation about topics that matter - “Sydney’s Homeless; Problem to Solve or People to Meet”. I shall do my best to attend and hopefully catch up with some of you there on the evening.

We have in “storage” historical documents about our Manly Rotary Club heritage and are looking for someone to take temporary responsibility of these and to sort into some sort of system that could be of great interest to many of our club members (and others). We would really appreciate a volunteer to undertake this task and will raise the matter again at our next meeting. If you are interested please contact me.

I hope everyone has a great week. Warm regards Susie.

KEY ACTIVITY: Lynne Shori – Video Presentation & update on the Sanitation Project

Lynne is the Founder of Wantaim PNG which has been operating for 12 years. The sanitation project was started in 2016 after the community leaders asked for help with their lack of toilets. PNG has a very young population and there are zero services. 85% of people are not using toilets and that creates a lot of problems.  The sanitation project is important as it helps the communities help themselves.

Lynne showed the video that has been produced to explain more about the project. This will be used to increase awareness and encourage sponsorship of the project. Wantaim PNG have helped establish 6 toilets and they are looking for funding to roll out more toilets on all the islands. It costs approx. $12k to set up one toilet.

World Toilet Day - 19th November 2018 at Manly Wharf. Looking for support from club members. Please put your hand up to help and let Lynne know if you can be available.
