Hi Everyone
A big thank you this week to David Park and Beverley Leahy for taking on the responsibility of distributing the Bowel Care packs throughout our community this year. It’s a task that members of our Club have undertaken for several years now and who knows how many lives have been saved as a result of people seeing the packs in Pharmacy stores and going through with the tests. This is a really worthwhile effort and thank you again.
Thank you also to Doug, Marieken, Ginny, Linton, Jay, Ted and Robert for your ongoing efforts in planning for the Fun Run on 1 September. There’s such a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes that is needed to make the event a success. Let’s try and make this tenth anniversary a really good one. Any of your suggestions for the day or the lead up to this special Fathers’ Day morning are most welcome. In particular we are looking for additional sponsors if you can help in that way.
PRID Noel Trevaskis has asked via our DG for donations to help support victims of the devastating attack in Christchurch last Friday. Funds are being managed by the Riccarton club - A/c # 03 0823 0350538 00 Reference Mosque Appeal.
Next Tuesday evening 26 March is our Board Meeting and if you have a particular issue or item you would like the Board to consider, please text or email either myself or Doug by Friday so that the item can be put on the Agenda.
Enjoy your weekend

 Wade Dylan - RYLA
Wade is currently working with RFW as a Care Coordinator, with a team of five staff members who provide allied health services to rural and remote schools and families via the internet. Wade is responsible for this support function. He thanked Manly Rotary Club for the opportunity to attend the RYLA camp and said that although working for a charity does not always offer an opportunity for leadership, believes he learned a great deal from his RYLA experience and can bring back those learned skills to his workplace.
Wade said he didn’t know what to expect when he arrived at the six-day camp but was determined to gain as much as he could from it. There were 16 seminars and speakers demonstrating/teaching various motivational leadership styles. Also included were practical activities for three to five hours a day covering real life situations with examples of how to deal with stress, public speaking and fund raising. There were 75 students in the camp and during the week raised close to $5000. Wade said that the participants generally came from the North Shore and Central Coast. He said that he had been shy about public speaking, but after the camp had spoken at a Rotary dinner with an audience of 300 people.
Wade said feedback from participants was excellent - praising the food, accommodation and friendly staff. Facilitators who conducted the reflection groups were people who had previously attended a RYLA camp.
  • Following Wade’s talk there was lively discussion about how to encourage new members to Rotary, with commitment of time being a drawback and the general public’s lack of knowledge about Rotary in general. Wade said he felt that young people are “single issue” and don’t want to attend meetings but are interested in projects. He suggested we could contact University Students who may have spare time but that cost may be an issue for them. We need to identify what people want out of Rotary – better connection with the community, networking and maybe the opportunity to do some good for society.
  • Brookvale Rotary Club has asked for volunteers as host parents for exchange students next year.
