GUEST SPEAKER
KALMA McLELLAN
Kalma talked about the struggle all Clubs are having with membership saying that so many people want to give but are unable to allocate the time; it is the same for many other organisations. Suggestions for increasing membership numbers may include:

PASSPORT CLUB
These members are required to attend at least four meetings a year and donate $1000 to Rotary Foundation or undertake 40 hours of community service. This model may suit young people. It could be a satellite club of eight or ten people and coach them how they can undertake the community service and rack up their hours.
CONNECT FAMILIES
Often children of Rotary members are involved in some of the activities of the Club. Our families have connections but often we don’t know what the friends of our families do. Perhaps they can they help with Rotary. Keep in touch with your family in as many ways as possible.
CONNECT PROFESSIONALLY
There is a classification system out there and we don’t use it. Determine what is missing from your Club. What talent do you need? Take on one or two at a time and go out and try to get them. There are 28 zones in the world and our zone has increased 82 in membership numbers (over the last year?). This is lower than in many other Countries. We have stayed white anglo-male – is this something to think about.
CONNECT COMMUNITIES

ROTARY BRANDING
Kalma asked that our Club make sure its branding is up to date by referring to the website.  She left a copy of the book “Creatures of Habit” written by a Rotarian. (Mark Huddleston). The book can be ordered on line.

DISTRICT PROJECT
24 October - Train Ride to End Polio. Kalma suggested our Club members may meet the train and hand over funds.
NATIONAL PROJECT
All 21 Governors have come together for the project “Sarah Brown’s Purple House” that provides dialysis services for indigenous people. The aim of the project is to provide scholarships for health workers and to purchase two more dialysis machines, A group of “Grey Nomads” has volunteered to “do up” the premises in Coober Pedy. The fund raiser is planned for 29 February 2020 and all Clubs are asked to contribute in some way to the project – perhaps plan something on that day to raise funds, or join the DG’s on the 29 February at the Opera House 11.00am where a group “Nutbush Dance” is planned.
Kalma thanked our Club for its support of the Days 4 Girls project.

GEOFF BRENNAN
Geoff talked about the March 2020 conference to be held in Wollonging, urging Club members to make a booking, saying it is a great vehicle for thinking about Rotary and what we can do in the future.  "Conferences are a way of encouraging us to look at ourselves". Geoff said the future of Rotary will be determined by individuals in individual Clubs. "Our greatest service is to make sure our Rotary Clubs continue".

GENERAL BUSINESS
  • On 26 November next our Club will present a cheque to Lifeline for their vehicle. CEO Lifeline Northern Beaches (David Thomas) will be there to receive our donation.
  • Ken mentioned a penguin research project for which our Club has applied for a grant through Zali Steggall. This will allow tracking of penguins (where they go and where they feed).
  • Richard reiterated the great work Lynne Shori has done with the sanitation project in PNG, for which she received an International Grant to get the project up and running. Lynne is now expanding the project to include other Islands in the area.
  • Vivien also mentioned the structure that has been built so that women can come and make the feminine hygiene products and ultimately sell them at the markets, so that they become self-sustainable. The Wynnum Manly Rotary club helped with transport of equipment for this project.
  • Chris Reynolds talked about his Wynnum Manly Club he joined in 2011 (the area was originally an Aboriginal settlement). He requested that Vivien transfer her membership from Manly NSW to Wynnum/Manly Queensland, as they have become engaged - congratulations and every best wish to you both!
