Birthdays:  John Pack 4 December

Welcome home Ted Waters

  • Shannon is the owner of Fit Minds Australia and a Cognitive Coach. She is also the author of the book Demystifying Dementia, (available now at $30). For every sale of a book, Shannon donates another to a family in financial need and living with someone with dementia  0439428995.
  • Shannon specializes in training and stimulating the core functions of the brain to help people enhance concentration, memory, critical thinking/problem solving and other functions. Shannon’s mission is to reduce the risk of dementia in Australia. She believes that if we can do something now, why leave it until later.
  • Cognitive Stimulation is first of its kind in Australia and helps people have a healthier brain, just as physical exercise helps maintain a healthy body. Shannon believes there’s a lot of wisdom in older people – “walking books of wisdom”.
These days people at any age don’t stimulate their brain as much as they used to, so how do you exercise the core function of the brain :
  • Physical activity
  • Cognitive stimulation
  • Medical – cholesterol, hypertension, heart condition, diabetes, obesity, smoking
  • Diet and nutrition - (we become what we eat or don’t eat – leafy veggies, berries, fatty fish eggs, nts/seeds, whole grains, beans, poultry, wine, olive oil)
  • Sleep
  • Passion and purpose
  • Spirituality and relaxation
  • Social interaction and connection (our brain is active, engaged and stimulated when we interact with others in conversations)
There are six core functions of the brain we need to exercise.
  • Concentration – jigsaw puzzles, crosswords, word searches, Sudoko - (four stimulations in this one)
  • Orientation – map reading (don’t use the GPS), matching and sorting games, patterns and sequence games
  • Critical thinking – logic puzzles, memory-training cards, code breaking puzzles
  • Computation - mental maths (add up items in your grocery shopping cart as you go through the aisle), number patterning, Sudoku games,(gives you four stimulations), Kakuro games, counting money.
  • Language - reading, crossword puzzles, word grid, writing by hand
  • Memory - word recall, mental juggling, memory training cards, discussing historical events and places, story telling, trivia
Shannon gave each Club member present a set of exercised to do at home. (Contact Shannon above if you want to discuss further)
  • Ken advised club members of NB Council functions where volunteers are requested to collect donations for various charities.
  • Ken reported that the Board at its last meeting approved funding of the Balgowlah Lifeline Truck - $23000, Foundation - $3000, Pioneer Clubhouse - $2500 for additional fly-screens, and to go ahead with Website development.
  • James reported that there has been a lot of interest from Clubs regarding the website development, including from District and International offices.
  • Wheels for Curtis – the organisers have been disappointed in the sale of raffle tickets for Curtis. Ginny has now included details in our face-book page in the hope of stimulating additional sales. The draw of the raffle is on 16 December at the Bella Vista Café, North Head at Midday. Club members welcome.
  • Dave Darcy Tribute - Ted asked that Club members book their tickets prior to Christmas so that we have an idea of numbers for the event.
  • Susie reported that the Blackmore’s hamper packing went well with 400 boxes being put together and filled with sixteen items for the various charities – many thanks to David Brown for your organization of this great community event.
