Hello everyone

A big thank you to all of you who have been volunteering over the last couple of months. We are a group of people who are often stretched for time in our busy lives but still can find time to spend on a most worthy cause, which is so great to see. Early mornings at the ferry wharf are often uncomfortable weather-wise and I don’t think any of us really like to put out our hands and ask for money, even though its something we often have to do if we are to help those less fortunate than ourselves. It is also so heartening to see how generous Sydney-siders are and a thank you to them also.

So sorry to hear of your fall David (Brown) – we hope you are round and about again very soon. We shall miss your historical expertise on Sunday for our North Head Tunnels tour but look forward to meeting your Grandson Alex who has so kindly offered to take over from you as our Guide. I look forward to seeing many of our club members there on Sunday.

Regarding your Committee Reports for our Board Meeting next Tuesday evening, could you please email them to Doug and myself with a copy to Norm Thomson and also bring along a hard copy for the meeting.

I hope everyone has a great week. Susie

End Polio. Doug referred to the latest Rotary Down Under magazine, which has a great explanation of what polio is, Rotary’s involvement and the current world challenges. George McLelland gave additional background including an outline of Bill Gates’ involvement and support.  Tomorrow (Wed Oct 24) is World End Polio Day. See further notes below under General Business: ADI/Rotary and PNG polio.
Rotary International – fake emails etc. Be careful – we’ve been warned! Doug referred to items he has already received (but not opened)
Foundation dinner 26 November Sydney Olympic Park $75. Doug explained this is Rotary’s ‘line of sight’ organisation for supporting charities – as well as a source to all Clubs (including ours!) of Foundation grants. Immediate Past RI President Ian Riseley will be guest speaker of an event hosted by PDG David Rand – a legend in his own right. We’ll try to arrange a full table. Prospects to date include George, Ted, Susie, Doug – all others encouraged to consider (see invite below)
North Head Tunnels and Picnic, and Vivien’s Farewell all confirmed.
  • Tunnels/Picnic: David B has had a fall and is incapacitated. We wish him well in his recovery. His grandson will deputise as Tour Guide on the day. Please refer to the invite below for details of $35/head payment process. Light picnic to be provided. Doug to bring gazebo and table.
  • Vivien’s farewell:  BYO platter and drinks. We’ll have a Cup Suite
Rotaract Meeting – Ted/Ty advised meeting was cancelled at last minute. Next Meeting date and Club attendees TBA
World End Polio Day – Rotary/ADI collaboration Doug explained that after various consultations, and having just completed two Manly Wharf fundraisers (one for End Polio), we would continue to work with ADI on holding a joint information campaign focusing particularly on the latest outbreak in PNG, but at a more suitable date.
Invictus Games volunteering – Q Station Manly. Evelyn, Ted, Ty, Ken and Norm all pitched in, and along with Susie and Doug were full of praise for how well the event was run – Thanks to all, and James Griffin for putting on a great event.
Wellness Walk (Bridgewalk for Mental Health). Evelyn, Ken, Richard, John and Jenny Warren, and Doug and Marieken all participated. Despite the weather, a record number registered. Thanks to all involved.
Volunteer hours – please let Beverley Leahy know via email on a weekly basis
KEY ACTIVITY – ASSEMBLY.  Committee Rep discussions re action plans, progress made, and issues (For consolidated report-back at next week’s board meeting)

Spam Communications

Dear Rotarian,
Rotary recently learned that scammers have created multiple communication and social media accounts that impersonate RI President Barry Rassin, RI President-elect Mark Maloney, General Secretary John Hewko and perhaps other Rotary leaders. The communication accounts include or involve email, WhatsApp and Viber.  The social media accounts have been on LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook.

These are not authentic Rotary communications. They are phishing and spoofing attempts to obtain money and personal information.  The perpetrators may attempt to convince Rotary members to send funds to support alleged Rotary causes.

Rotary monitors for and responds to these attempts as part of an ongoing effort to keep member, program participant, and staff data safe. We also work with LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, and WhatsApp to remove imposter accounts.

Neither President Rassin’s, President-elect Maloney’s, nor General Secretary Hewko’s authentic accounts have been compromised.

Rotary members should continue to exercise caution:

  • Disregard any suspicious message that offers money, requests money, or asks for your personal information.
  • Avoid opening attachments or following links in suspicious messages.
  • Pay close attention to the details of the email address and signature block to verify the sender.

If you receive what you believe to be a suspicious message from the president, general secretary, or another Rotary leader, please forward it to and then delete it immediately.
