PRESIDENT SUSIE'S WEEKLY REPORT

Hello Everyone
What a pleasure it was to welcome Phillip from Northern Ireland to our meeting again this week. Interesting to hear it seems a worldwide issue for Rotary Clubs that we need to network and encourage new and vibrant people to our Clubs.
Also welcome to Dana Malcova who was our guest speaker for the morning. We look forward to seeing Dana again hopefully as a potential member of our Club. If not, at least a “friend of Manly Rotary” in the role of volunteer for our fun run this year. Alex did a great job with her photography and we look forward to some publicity on their Facebook page.
We did not have an opportunity to talk about the “My Community Project” Grant available from NSW Government – from $20,000 to $200,000. Applications close on 15 May 2019. The interesting thing about this Grant is that from 15 July people across NSW will vote for the projects they want funded in their community. Please give some thought about our Club applying for a Grant and we can discuss it at our next meeting. Your ideas are really welcome as to how our local community may benefit from such a Grant. If you want to know more, then check mycommunityproject@dpc.nsw.gov.au .
Do hope you had a happy and safe Easter and look forward to seeing you next Tuesday 30 April.

Welcome

Welcome to our guest speaker Dana Malcova, her colleague Alex and Phillip from Northern Ireland

GUEST SPEAKER - DANA MALCOVA "MINDSET ECONOMY"

DANA  discussed the concept of the  “Mindset Economy”. Dana talked about data and how this is used today – there is so much data that we have not been using it well, apparently only using half a percent that is available to us. Dana believes we need to have more selective ways of sourcing, processing and producing information and insight for business decision making. This she believes can be done with improved understanding of individuals, (the Mindset is the structure of  person) observing the interaction between people, mapping the obstacles then working on meeting the future needs of customers.

GENERAL BUSINESS

FEEDBACK FROM GENERAL ASSEMBLY
Evelyn Ciocco and George McLelland and Barbara Gardiner attended the Assembly on Sunday 14 April.
George said Barbara, Evelyn and he were very impressed by three of the speakers The incoming DG for 2019-2020 - Kalma McLellan, Gina Growden from Terrigal Club and a young woman from a Satellite Club Rebecca Fry. Rebecca's presentation was excellent and well received. She believes there are various types of clubs that can be successful including:
  • Satellite Clubs that can be used to start new clubs or support struggling clubns
  • Personalised Membership Clubs – members dip in and out as they have interest and capacity
  • Traditional Clubs with a Twist
  • Passport Club – no focus on meetings; members havke a “Passport” and complete a certain number of hours of service
Rebecca said that Clubs need to adapt to new ways - that Rotary Clubs have to be open to changing their ways if they are to survive in the modern world. Contact Susie Morgan if you would like to receive a copy of Rebecca's talk.

Gina Growden is responsible for the image of Rotary worldwide. She had a lot to say about shortcomings of Club Facebooks not being kept up to date etc. Gina is passionate about her role and we all felt our Club would benefit from being in touch with her. A recent survey found that 40% of the population does not know what Rotary does, or did. 90% of the population doesn’t know what we do. Each Club should consider appointing a public image officer with a budget, to show people what Rotary does. Contact for Gina 0412 128 106 gina.growden@bigpond.com.

Karma McLelland should be given the credit for putting the Assembly program together which was all about Clubs accepting the changes that have to be embraced if they are to survive and flourish. At one of our recent meetings we discussed being project focused - at the Assembly the same line of thought was expressed as "Engagement and Impact".

LIFELINE has asked us for volunteers for their surfing event on 28 April in Manly.  They are asking for people to help with breakfast and lunch barbecue.

FUND RAISING Susie mentioned a communication from an organization called “Comedy for a Cause” that runs stand up comedy shows featuring some of the best comedians from Sydney and Melbourne International Comedy Festival, to raise funds for various causes. They provide comedians, ticketing, ighting, sound, marketing materials and event management, Our job would be to sell the tickets for around $30-$35 from which the organization takes $12. There are testimonials from over 15 charities thanking Comedy for a Cause for their event organization. If you think we may be interested find out more on comedyforacause.net/further-information.
