GUEST SPEAKER - SHANNON NEVIN - WALK'N'TALK FOR LIFE
  • Four years ago Shannon made a decision to help people in the community, particularly those with mental health issues. He believes there are too many people taking their lives by suicide in our community and wants to help protect them and save lives. Shannon talked about the benefits of talking to each other and the way that exercise can help by getting the endorphins going and making you feel a lot better.  He mentioned that many people come to the gym feeling and looking glum and after a good exercise regime, leave feeling a lot happier and less depressed.
  • Today there seems to be a lack connection with people so Shannon started his “Walk’n’Talk” mornings on a Sunday at 8.00am starting at Manly Lagoon and walking to Shelley Beach and back. He gave everyone who wanted to join in a yellow T Shirt to make them feel connected, and invited them to “walk and talk”. It is a free event and every month culminates with a bbq that is very often donated by a local business or residents.Shannon cited examples of people who have benefited enormously from the morning walks; lives he possibly saved and feedback he has received from participants whose lives have changed around. Shannon is now in the process of setting up “Walk’n’Talk” groups throughout Sydney suburbs and NSW Country towns (for example Bathurst, Lithgow, Wagga Wagga, Gundagai, Tamworth).
  • Shannon has a great social media following that is helping people through difficult situations in their lives.  He recently talked to a group of students at a school in Lithgow and encouraged them to just do one act of random kindness a day, to help people feel good about themselves – and it works.
  • “Walk’n’Talk groups are at Manly Lagoon and Dee Why Beach Surf Club on alternate Sundays starting at 8.00am.
WEBSITE
  • The possibility of updating our website was discussed. This could be in collaboration with other Rotary Clubs on the Northern Beaches. Because branding is the same for all Clubs it would be cost effective to develop a website for each club including the corporate branding. Three clubs have already shown interest in the project. Action: James will prepare a proposal that will be emailed to club members for consideration and ultimately presented to the Board for a decision. (19 November Board Meeting).
YOUTH
  • Evelyn talked about volunteers from McKellar Girls School for the hamper packing event. She is waiting to hear from Sam Cole with any offers of assistance.
  • Upper Northern Beaches Club is asking for volunteers to help with supervision of the Billy Cart races on 24 November. From 9.00am till 2.00pm. Please contact Debbie McMurran on 0403061604 if you are interested.
  • A request has also been received for accommodation for 6-8 weeks next June-July 2020 for a student 17 year old Melina from Finland. (john.brauer@essey.com)
MANLY VILLAGE SCHOOL MARKET STALL
  • Saturday 16 November. Richard is going to purchase some string bags and baskets from PNG to sell at the stall as people have shown interest in the display we generally have on the table. Richard will give to Lynne Shori to bring back with her early December (for our 21 December stall).

WELCOME TO MANLY ROTARY BROCHURE
  • James presented the first draft of a welcome brochure that was well received by club members present. It was decided to go with sizes 12 and 10 fonts.

HAMPER PACKING AT BLACKMORES – 30 November 10am  - 2.00pm
  • Volunteers please contact Susie by Thursday evening 7 November if you would like to be involved.  We have Susie, Matt, Jack Pack, David Park. Tracy and Robert will let Susie know this week, if they are available.
