Manly Rotary Club and the Manly Scenic Fun Run (and walk)
The Manly Scenic Fun Run and Walk was established to become the principal revenue earner for the funds that we sought - and a rallying point for those in our community who wanted to give their support.
What we've done
Some of the many projects we've completed in the eight years since  running this great event have included:
  • Bear Cottage (Manly) – donating funds for equipment to assist in giving respite care to terminally ill children and their families
  • Manly Community Center (Manly)  - Completing major front-of-house renovations for an organisation supporting the homeless and disadvantaged
  • Manly Hospital (Manly) - Funding on two occasions state-of-the art diagnostic equipment, unique to the Northern Beaches
  • Manly Women’s Shelter (Manly) -  Initiating the establishment of a vital residential shelter for homeless women; and more recently, refurbishing a third accommodation unit.
  • Pioneer Clubhouse (Balgowlah) -  completing a major renovation to provide additional facilities for the vocational rehabilitation of adults with mental illness, and supporting the lease/purchase of a new transport vehicle
  • Royal Far West (Manly) - renovating an accommodation floor for an organisation providing health services for rural children; and more recently, funding significant additional research into effective care strategies
  • Stewart House (Curl Curl) - providing additional bathroom facilities for an organisation supporting children in need by giving them a 12 day break from their home environment
  • Sailability (Manly) - Funding the purchase of essential equipment for an organisation of volunteers who teach disabled children to sail
  • The Salvation Army (Manly)  - Building a homeless people's breakfast kitchen, showers and lockers.
Actively backing these initiatives, our club (once known as Manly Sunrise but now referred to simply as the Manly Rotary Club) developed its own strategic plan to 'make a real and significant difference' much closer to home: particularly by improving the service capabilities of a number of local charities who wanted to 'do more'. Where possible, this would be through funding and project managing significant capital works programs for them, or providing other related services or equipment.
The significance of our work has been recognised
We've been pleased in the process to have received numerous awards - both from Rotary both in Australia and Internationally, and from our community too:
  • District 9680's Community Service Projects Award
  • Rotary International's 'Change Maker' Award
  • Two Warringah Electorate Volunteer of the Year/Meritorious Service Awards
  • A related award from Manly Council
  • Rotary International's Significant Community Service Project Achievement Award
  • Manly Council's Australia Day Award for our Fun Run for its Significant Contribution to Our Community (2014)
In a word, we've been grateful for the ways our local community has backed us, and supported our cause!
