  • Susie reminded members of next District Conference
  • New Member seminar being conducted at Forestville RSL Club, Saturday October 28 2017, 8.45am to 1pm.  Contact District Governor Warren McGurgen by October 20.
  • John Shanahan suggested that the $3000 annual donation from Manly Rotary Club to Police Legacy be made at the “Police Officer of the Year Awards” function to be held at the Frenchs Forest Police Station on October 26 at 10am.  Superintendent Dave Darcy invited Manly Rotary members to attend.
  • Manly Woman’s Centre notified the club that they are expanding their committee and invited Manly Rotary to nominate a member.
  • Ted Waters informed that he is taking part in a Rotary International “WEBINAR” representing Manly Rotary.  Manly club was selected as recognition of our membership and as Ted is Membership Director and a wonderful orator, nominated for the task.
  • The Manly/Freshwater Scout group has approached the club for financial assistance in repairing/upgrading hall facilities due to recent damage.  A club representative to attend this Saturday.
  • Susie discussed her and Norm attending the Dee Why Rotaract meeting on Monday, October 9.  Also present was a member of Belrose Rotary.  A small young group of 9 members present plus two guest speakers from “Heart Kids for Life” charity.  Informal meeting but enthusiastic group.  Susie and Norm approached by the guest speaker to ask if Manly Club would be interested in supporting their national charity initiative.  The charity would be happy to present to Manly Club if invited.
  • Richard and Tahina have plans underway for the International Polio Day celebration for October 24 at Manly Wharf.  It is proposed that this take the place of the regular Tuesday meeting and apart from the material to promote the Polio cause we promote the Manly Rotary Club, the Fun Run and also take the opportunity to scout for new members.  Richard confirmed that approval was gained for our volunteers to access the central walkway at Manly Wharf during the morning peak hour and as it is only two weeks away the supply of brochures, banners, new polo/t-shirts etc. is urgent.
Susie announced that the club is losing our very popular Daniel after next week as he is moving to the southwest area of Sydney.  Will miss you Daniel, but he has informed us that he has found a Rotary club to join, our loss, their gain.
Cathy and Patrick from the “UMOJA ORPHANAGE” in Kenya, Africa, gave a wonderful presentation of the amazing work being done for homeless/parentless children in Kenya.  Cathy explained her qualifications for the task she took on as firstly a teacher and secondly as a Paul Harris Fellow from the Bundaberg, Qld. Sunrise Rotary Club.  With the help of a video presentation she explained her motivation and success in creating the orphanage and the sustainable farm that produces fruit, vegetables and meat for the centre.  Without the help of many Rotarians and locals it would not have been possible, but it was apparent that the drive and persistence of Cathy were the catalyst for the project.  Patrick spoke of his proud heritage and the work he is doing as a director of the project and also the Umoja Tour and Safari company that he runs in conjunction with the Orphanage.
From the robust question time after it was apparent that most members were impressed and could possibly lead to further discussion if the club were to support this kind of project.
Susie informed that the Manly Rotary Club has a table secured for the Manly Community Centre function to be held on Sunday November 5 2017 and will need volunteers for the day.  To be discussed at the next meeting
Doug Miller – Assemblies -  informed that the next discussion will be at the October 31, 2017 meeting and all project persons should be prepared.
Ty Stokoe – Rotary Polo shirts/t-shirts to be printed after agreed earlier discussion on colour and design.
Sargent – John Warren.  A profitable session with some questionable research and his continued reference to our new member “Troy”.
Raffle – John Shanahan
